Descriptive Card Text
In 1531, Juan Diego was rushing to Mass in Mexico City when he encountered a miraculous apparition of the Blessed Virgin, who identified herself as “Our Lady of Guadalupe.” She instructed him to build a temple at the location of her appearance. Skeptical, the Bishop demanded a sign to verify Juan’s claim. In response, the Blessed Virgin prompted Juan to collect roses and present them to the Bishop. When Juan unveiled his cloak to reveal the roses, the image of Our Lady was miraculously imprinted inside, confirming her presence as he had described. This event marked the beginning of a site that has become a significant pilgrimage destination.
Saint Teresa of Avila, otherwise known as Teresa of Jesus, emerged as a significant figure in 16th-century Spain. Born on March 28, 1515, in the small village of Gotarrendura, Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada entered the Carmelite Order early in her life. She quickly gained recognition for her mystical experiences and profound spiritual insights, documented in her autobiographical works, including "The Life of Teresa of Jesus" and "The Interior Castle."
Throughout her life, Teresa experienced various visions and ecstatic episodes, which she meticulously described in her writings. A deeply spiritual individual, she dedicated herself to prayer and contemplation, striving for a more profound relationship with God. Teresa highlighted the significance of inner prayer, simple devotion, and authentic spiritual living.
One of her monumental achievements was reforming the Carmelite Order, aiming to rejuvenate its original commitment to contemplative practices and asceticism. She established several convents, most notably the Discalced Carmelite Monastery of Saint Joseph in Ávila, which became a focal point for her reformative efforts. The term "discalced" signifies the choice of wearing sandals instead of shoes, representing a commitment to simplicity and poverty.
Teresa's works on prayer and mysticism have profoundly shaped Christian spirituality over time. She was canonized in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV and later declared a Doctor of the Church, honored for her contributions to theology and spiritual life. Embrace the legacy of Saint Teresa of Avila with our beautifully crafted medal, a perfect reminder of her enduring influence on faith and spirituality.
